The powerful Panasonic Lumix S DC S1H camera has entered the coveted list of cameras that Netflix accepts for its productions.
Until now, the Netflix list consisted of film cameras from brands such as ARRI, RED, Blackmagic or Panavision, all with a more classic structure and consequently with a series of requirements in the shootings that are quite far from those necessary to operate more compact cameras such as the Lumix S DC S1H. We already announced at the time the potential of this camera, a DSLR that provides cinematic quality. We recalled the 6K and 4K recording, its native dual ISO and its 24.2 megapixel sensor among many other potentials of the Lumix S1H.
The Lumix S DC S1H happens to be the smallest and cheapest camera that can be used in a Netflix production as a main camera. However, not everything goes at Netflix and although it is accepted for their shoots, a number of requirements must be followed in terms of recording formats.
The Netflix Post Technology Alliance is in charge of establishing these minimum requirements. Based on the assumption that the sensor must be in Full Frame, Super 35 or pixel/pixel mode, the images shot must be 4K 10-bit with 4:2:2 sampling rate, with Panasonic ALL-I V-Log curve. Internal recording in this mode allows up to 30 fps which increases to 60 fps if an external recorder is used.
Netflix also makes a series of recommendations in the recording settings although they are not mandatory as in the case of the recording format. Depending on the lenses used, they recommend disabling vignetting compensation in the image. It also provides a series of recommendations when exposing with the Lumix S DC S1H according to the IRE table where it is recommended to set black to 0%, gray to 18% and white to 90%.
The complete list of recommended Netflix settings can be viewed at this link link.
As far as we know, they have not yet announced any production using this camera, but we are sure that we will soon have new news about it.
