Atomos’ new 5.2″ Shinobi HDR monitor is a surprise announcement this week.
The Shinobi continues Atomos’ obsession with expert Japanese fighter titles. Shinobi was, of course, another word for Ninja, and that’s why the company’s new HDR monitor fits directly into the Ninja V recorder/monitor, with one important difference. The Shinobi is just a monitor and has no recording functionality.
Not everyone wants to record their images on an external monitor. Putting recording functionality on a monitor means it becomes more expensive, more power hungry and more cumbersome. If all you want is simply a better way to view and frame your images, then recording skills are not required. And this is where the Shinobi fits the market perfectly.
The Shinobi is advertised as a 4K monitor. In fact, it is a 1920×1080 monitor that accepts a 4K signal. At around 5″ the pixel density is 427ppi. So it would not be a great benefit to have a full 4K resolution at that size, and to focus critically you can zoom in.
The Shinobi is capable of 1000 nits and a claimed contrast range of 10 stops. In addition, it is fully compatible with the X-Rite i1DisplayPro for calibration.
As for resolutions, the device supports 4K resolution input from 23.98p to 29.97p, which means that 50p and 59.94p are currently not supported. However, higher frame rates up to 59.94p are supported for HD.
