As we announced last Friday, Avid Media Composer 7 has been officially released and is now available for testing, purchase or upgrade.
In April we told you about some of its most important new features and now we will complete them in a more visual way. From the Avid forums and Twitter, editor Wim Van den Broeck was in charge of informing us about these 25 new features of version 7:
1. Waveform redraw performance has been improved in this update.
2. It is now possible to include or exclude video, audio and/or data tracks when relinking.
3. Monitoring of background queues within Media Composer.
4. Now we will also have background queue monitoring from a web browser.
5. In this update you can add “spanned markers” (or extended markers), setting their duration in the timeline instead of marking a specific frame.
6. If you go to the “Info” tab you will find information about the license, hardware and AMA.
7. When we install our version 7 we will have access to the “Background Services“, which allow us to use the added function called “Dynamic Media Folder” and with it assign certain rules for background consolidations and transcodings.
8. The “Dynamic Media Folders” help us to organize and automate certain processes, assigning functions to each folder.
9. FrameFlex is one of the most important new features, as it makes it possible to ingest material in high resolutions to deliver HD or SD projects (scaling for this purpose).
Here is a video tutorial on the workflow to follow to use the new FrameFlex function when we have material in high resolutions. You will be able to see how to scale down to HD and how to apply 1D or 3D LUTs if you are using RAW material.
10. Thanks to the color assignment on the AMA clips they can be identified more easily.
11. If you press the ALT (Option) key while dragging clips from a folder on your computer, the clips are “linked” to AMA instead of being imported.
12. QuickTime files with alpha channel are now supported in AMA, appearing in the bins as a “Matte Key”.
13. Support for AS-11 specification.
14. The functions for audio mixing have been improved, so that it is now possible to add or remove displayed elements, select and apply audio effects directly and use the “Master Fader Track” in the Audio Mixer tool.
15. Some changes have also been made to the audio settings, adding the Monitor volume slider, which remains adjusted even if you close, restart or change projects.
16. As mentioned above, with this update it is possible to consolidate or transcode clips as a background operation, in any supported resolution or AMA format.
In this link you have more information about the updated AMA plugins and which ones can be used or not with certain functions.
17. New visualization of the bins. New icons have been added at the bottom of the bin that allow you to select the display mode, replacing the previous button where you could choose between “Text”, “Frame” or “Script View”.
18. Configure masks in the output monitor.
19. Another new feature concerning audio is the ability to modify the audio gain of the master clips directly in the timeline, without the need to add a keyframe to do so.
20. A new function allows to choose only clips “linked” by AMA when performing a consolidation or a transocoding.
21. iXML support, preserving your data in BWAV files.
22. Color management has also been affected, being able to choose from a set of LUTs or “color transformations” supplied by Avid or apply our own looks through a CDL (Color Decision List).
23. Native support for XAVC codec.
24. “Change Track” function to affect a marker.
25. Finally, it is now possible to scroll the timeline vertically.
