Tutorials on Lightworks, multiplatform editing system

EditShare will be showing at NAB its Lightworks editing system running on Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems. This is a major event, as it would be the first time that a significant non-linear editing system has been shown on all three major platforms in use today.

NAB 2013 attendees will be able to test all three versions at the booth, working with exactly the same material.

Lightworks-Mac

In addition, taking advantage of the release of Lightworks for these three operating systems, the company has begun to publish basic tutorials aimed at new users, although it is expected that they will also be useful for advanced users in the future.

The interesting thing is that, in addition to teaching us step by step how Lightworks works, they are presented together with downloadable material and are subtitled in English, so we can use Youtube’s translation function to translate them into our language.

Installation and first steps

In this first tutorial you will see how to download Lightworks from their website, install it (on Windows) and take a first look at the system.

2. Introduction

Then we have to set the settings of our project, adjusting its resolution and frame rate.

To start working with the material provided by EditShare you will have to download it from the link on Youtube. If you click on “Show more”, next to the video information, you will see a link to download the files.

3. Imports and bins

Here you will learn how to import the files in different ways, either by transcoding or by linking them to the original media.

You also start to see the work with the bins, differentiating them between temporary and permanent, renaming them, etc.

4. Transfer media between bins

How to move clips between bins in various ways, how to duplicate them, how to arrange the material inside the bins and how to create new bins are some of the issues explained in this tutorial.

5. Bin management

In this video you will see how to view clips inside the bins and how to use the “Tags”.

6. Viewing clips

Finally, you will learn how to view the clips and how to use the Viewer.

Following the NAB demos, a new version of Lightworks on Windows and a public beta for Linux is expected to be released on April 30. In the meantime, EditShare has released a Windows 11.0.3 installer update that fixes some issues with installation and licensing and allows installation on Windows 8 systems.
