New MR7 field monitor

The company ikan has introduced its MR7, a new professional field monitor that will go on sale this summer.

MR7 is the first of the new “M” line, joining other ikan monitors such as the “D” or “V” series. It has a 7″ LCD screen, with a viewing angle of 170 degrees and a brightness of 400 NIT.

One of the functions that stands out the most is its recording capacity. MR7 is not only a monitor, but it can also capture files with a resolution of 1280 x 720 in H.264, and store them on an internal memory of 4GB. This memory can be expanded thanks to the support of an SD card up to 32 GB, which is not included. Thus we can easily create proxies or even a copy of the files directly from the monitor.

In addition, when being used as a recorder, there is an “auto start/stop” function capable of synchronizing the timecode of the camera with the files being captured on MR7; so you can start recording through the camera and stop on the monitor, or vice versa.

MR7 is the first ikan monitor to support 2K (via 3G-SDI), and the company advertises this quality as one of its major new features. However, and considering the adoption of 4K within the industry, it seems that they have fallen short in this aspect.

In addition to 3G-SDI, its connections include HDMI, CVBS and headphone output. It is also possible to convert the HDMI input to HD-SDI output.

In order to be able to view the image with good quality and precision, regardless of the type of location we are in, a “Daytime” button has been included, which improves its use outdoors. In addition to this function, we also have other features to control the material: waveform, vectorscope, RGB Parade, a test pattern generator and a vumeter.

The MR7 monitor is announced to be released this summer with a price tag of $2,299. In addition, the company will also release two packs: one that will include the monitor and the DragonFly stand, for $2,499; and another with a wireless (Wi-fi) signal transmitter and the DragonFly stand, the price of which is yet to be announced.
