Christie supplies the first cinemas with digital laser projection

Christie will be the first company to supply and install a commercial digital laser projection solution. It will be in the Cinerama Cinemas, Seattle (USA), which after the acquisition of a digital laser projector 4K become the first permanent installation of its kind in the world.

The owner of Cinerama Cinemas made the decision after several demonstrations of this technology earlier this year. The projector in question has a scalable light output of up to 60,000 lumens and the ability to show both 2D and 3D movies with high contrast ratios and accurate color reproduction that ensure a new immersive and natural experience for the viewer.

Christie recently received approval from the U.S. FDA, allowing it to sell this type of projectors for use in movie theaters (the only approval to date), and after that began technical evaluations. It is expected that by early 2014, conventional digital projection will have been replaced by the latest of its laser projectors.

Christie is one of the pioneering companies in the world of digital technology. Lately it has made several demonstrations of its laser projection capabilities, as with G.I.JOE: RETALIATION (first commercial exhibition of a 3D film with levels of 14 foot lamberts) or its sample to a select group of exhibitors in Asia achieving 72,000 lumens with its prototype.

A wide range of laser projectors are planned for introduction throughout 2013 (and beyond) to power the digital cinema, proAV, visualization and simulation markets.

If you want to learn more about digital projection I recommend that you take a look at the Advanced DCP Course, scheduled for December.
