ARRI launches new Alexa XT family with XR Module

ARRI is revamping its entire line of cameras with the release of the Alexa XT family, which includes the new XR Module for internal ARRIRAW recording, jointly developed by ARRI and Codex.

Alexa XT

First we will talk about this family of Alexa XT (Xtended Technology) cameras, which includes four new models: Alexa XT, Alexa XT M, Alexa XT Plus and Alexa XT Studio. These will replace the previous models except for the original Alexa.

The new features are:

  • 4:3 sensor

Each Alexa XT model is equipped with a 4:3 (2880 x 2160) sensor, the same size and shape as a Super 35mm film frame, to make more effective use of anamorphic lenses and create a cinematic panoramic look. An anamorphic de-squeeze license is also included, as well as the one that allows high-speed recording (up to 120fps).

  • Internal NDs

A “Filter Module IFM-1” has been included that uses the IRND filters, calculating based on the sensitivity of EI 800 without the need for external ND (Neutral Density) filters. Eight densities are available ranging from ND 0.3 to ND 2.4.

  • ARRI Lens Data System

Now also, all models now include an LDS (Lens Data System) mount, which allows the position of all rings to be read and lens metadata to be written in each format that Alexa can record.

More than 41 lens models have integrated LDS, including ARRI/ZEISS Master Anamorphic, Master Prime and LDS Ultra Prime series, Master Macro 100 and ARRI/FUJINON Alura Lightweight Zooms. For other lenses it is possible to store the lens table within the Alexa using the “Lens Data Archive” function.

  • New scopes

The new VMB-3 (Viewfinder Mounting Bracket) has a much stronger and more rigid design, thanks in part to the use of two lightweight 15mm rods. These bars also make it easier to change camera mounts (from a tripod to a crane, or Steadicam, for example) and accessories such as follow focus can be hung instead of being on top of the base.

The VEB-3 (Viewfinder Extension Bracket) is available as a stand-alone accessory and has a folding arm that holds the viewfinder securely even if the camera moves.

  • Fan

A quieter fan has also been incorporated.

XR Module

ARRI and Codex have jointly developed a side panel called the XR (Xtended Recording) Module that replaces the previous SxS Module and allows ARRIRAW in-camera recording at up to 120fps.

Until now, ARRIRAW workflow meant connecting an external recording device to the camera, such as the Codex Onboard. It was either top-mounted or connected via a long cable. The aim of this new module is to respond to the demand of professional users who asked for a lighter, smaller and less expensive configuration.

  • XR Capture Drive

The XR Module is included in the entire new Alexa XT family and uses a new solid state drive called the XR Capture Drive, which is capable of storing 512GB in its small, rugged aluminum enclosure, identical to Codex’s capture drives.

Physically, the XR module enlarges the camera body by 8mm and eliminates unnecessary cables. In addition, with a speed of 6.7Gbit/s it is the fastest digital disk currently available.

  • Recording formats

It includes several internal recording options, with a choice of ARRIRAW for the highest quality available, or ProRes and DNxHD codecs for significantly longer recording times.

Recording at 24fps can contain 55 minutes of ARRIRAW, 2.1 hours of ProRes 4444, or about 3 hours if ProRes 422HQ or DNxHD 220.

If we talk about 120fps, it is possible to save about 11 minutes. This recording speed only supports 16:9, if we are using the cameras with the larger sensor, in 4:3, we will be able to reach up to 96fps.

It will also be possible to use an adapter for the XR module that will allow ProRes or DNxHD to be recorded on standard SxS cards, as on current Alexa cards.

  • File download

Once out of the camera, the XR Capture Drive offers several ways to transfer data, always using the Codex workflow.

Codex Capture Drive Dock: Single-Dock, allows data copying via fast USB3.
Codex Capture Drive Transfer Station: Dual-Dock, can make clones of XR Capture drives and connect to a Mac Pro via the high-speed SAS interface. It is very useful for copying, archiving and creating dailies quickly.
Codex Vault: is a portable data station with its own touch screen based interface. It allows copying, archiving, notification or creation of dailies on-set, even with LTO-5 backup.

ALEXA_XR

Thanks to these new upgrade methods ARRI is offering its customers the latest advances in technology without forcing them to buy a new camera. In addition to the XR Module, ARRI is offering individual upgrades that provide most of the features of the XT configuration on all existing Alexa’s (excluding the 4:3 sensor license).
